Create and Keep Your 2019 Resolution
Every year thousands of people set out to create and keep a New Year’s resolution, but more than half of all these goals will fall short. However, that doesn’t mean your resolution has to be one of those that fail. By identifying the right resolution, creating a plan to achieve it, and with the support of those around you, you can improve your life. This year, our team at Midwest Heating & Cooling will set out to achieve our resolutions and invite you to do the same by following these simple steps.
The Right Resolution
The first step to a New Year’s resolution is to choose a goal that’s both achievable and meaningful. Most resolutions will fail because they’re not the right resolution for your lifestyle, have unrealistic time expectations, or are too vague to be attainable. Your goal should always be SMART, a term that many of you have probably heard in some form or another: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. By following these simple parameters you’ll be well on your way to reaching your goal.
The Perfect Plan
The next step should always be creating a plan that will help you achieve your goal—in a way that’s easy to implement and that will enable you to overcome any obstacles that you come across. If you’re trying to start a new routine or break a bad habit, the best way is to recognize what leads to that behavior and change the environment. For example, if your resolution is to end your procrastination of all those household tasks, such as furnace maintenance, you should recognize the reason behind your procrastination. Maybe you’re concerned it will be too difficult, maybe you don’t feel like you have the time; the solution would be to set aside a specific day and time that you handle all your household chores to ensure they are completed on time. And don’t worry, we always make all your HVAC appointments affordable and easy!
The Close-Knit Community
It’s important to remember that you don’t have to complete a resolution alone, and in the New Year, you’ll have plenty of company. By mentioning your goal to a few people, you’ll create an unofficial support system for yourself, people who know and cheer you on in the process of achieving your goals. You can also join a group, like an exercise class, to capitalize on the idea of a group mind-set. It can add a helpful social pressure that will keep you on the path to your resolution, with people who will notice if you’re skipping a day and get you back on track.
The “Negative Nancy”
No one is perfect and it’s important to remember that you may have setbacks along the way, which is why you need to have a plan in place when an obstacle comes up. People will face many of the same problems on the road to achieving a goal, like feeling that they’re not making any progress, so it’s important to focus on one small step at a time, a small part that seems achievable in the short-term. Additionally, you should always try to remain positive, but make sure to also be realistic. It’s great to look ahead to your future goal, yet you also need to look at the present and overcome the hurdles in your path. Finally, you should avoid people who aren’t supportive of your goals and who will discourage you from trying. Remember, a “negative Nancy” isn’t helpful on your path to success!
A New Year’s resolution is a great way to outline your goals for the year, but making a plan and remaining realistic is the best way to be successful. And remember, your friends at Midwest Heating & Cooling have your back for all your HVAC needs in 2019!
